The Armeestab (A Stab) supports the Chief of the Army in leading the Defense Department area and is responsible for the overall military planning and development of the Swiss Army. Here, in accordance with political guidelines, the strategic foundations, the development of the armed forces, and army and armament planning are developed, and tasks in the international security context are performed. The leadership, management, and coordination of all cross-sectional areas (personnel, finance, real estate) also fall within the responsibility of the Armeestab.

The Swiss Army employs over 9'000 employees in four military and around 200 civilian professions -- and this at 110 locations throughout Switzerland. Provision is also made for young talent: The Swiss Army trains apprentices in over 30 professions.
