The Army Staff (SM Es) provides support to the Chief of the Army in the conduct of the Defense Group and is responsible for the global military planning of the army and its related development. Based on political directives, it develops the strategic bases, the development of the armed forces as well as the planning of the armed forces and weaponry and assumes tasks in the context of international security. Within its sphere of competence are also the conduct, management and coordination of all transversal sectors (Personnel, Finance, Real Estate).

The Swiss Army employs over 9000 collaborators within the framework of four military professions and approximately 200 civilian professions, in 110 locations throughout the national territory. Furthermore, it provides for new recruits, training apprentices in over 30 professions.
