The Army Staff (EM A) supports the Chief of the Army in its activities of conducting the departmental domain of Defense and ensures global military planning as well as the development of the Swiss Army as a whole. It elaborates the strategic bases, the development of the armed forces and the planning of the army and armaments, in accordance with political directives, and assumes tasks in the context of international security. The management, steering and coordination of all cross-cutting areas (personnel, finance, real estate) also fall within its competence.

The Swiss Army employs more than 9000 employees in four military professions and approximately 200 civilian professions, across 110 sites throughout Switzerland. It also ensures succession by training apprentices in more than 30 trades.
